Duke of Edinburgh's International Award Adventurous Journey
The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award (DofE), active in over 140 countries, was founded in 1956 by The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. It aims to cultivate independence, confidence, teamwork, and social responsibility in young people through practical activities such as Voluntary Service, Skills, Physical Recreation, and Adventurous Journey. Completing challenges at different levels (Bronze, Silver, Gold) signifies repeated self-transcendence and growth.
As an officially certified Award Center, our school international curriculum division hosted its second DofE Adventurous Journey this semester, with 57 students participating in the Bronze Award and 18 students taking on the Silver Award challenge. Carrying their backpacks, they completed their Adventurous Journey amid oceans, mountains, and starlit skies. Now, let’s see how they "broke their cocoons" and grew through this transformative challenge.
01 Adventurous Journey Overview
To push their limits, students first completed a 2-day, 1-night practice journey before undertaking the qualifying expedition—2 days and 1 night for Bronze or 3 days and 2 nights for Silver. The journey included mountain trekking, caving, and sea kayaking. Through these outdoor experiences, they not only built physical endurance but also demonstrated self-planning, independence, and teamwork in overcoming challenges.
02 Skills and Spirit
Through pre-expedition training, students learned essential survival skills such as gear management, tent pitching, and fire-making. Each meticulously prepared, laying a solid foundation for the challenges ahead.

03 Reflections on Growth
★Bronze Award
Lin, Grade 9: The Bronze Award challenge taught me the true meaning of physical and mental endurance. During kayaking, we all faced exhaustion and difficulties, but through teamwork, we overcame them and succeeded. This experience taught me perseverance and the value of collaboration.
Zeng, Grade 9: This challenge made me realize how crucial teamwork is. An individual’s strength is limited, but together, no obstacle is insurmountable.
Foreign Teacher James: Our kayaking trip to Huizhou went smoothly, with only minor delays due to heavy rain. The students paddled together, overcoming challenges and bonding in the evenings. I hope they’ll remember the importance of teamwork and the simple pleasures of life beyond technology.
★Silver Award
Luo, Grade 10: This was my first caving experience. Seeing ancient rock formations made me feel how small humans are in the face of nature. Yet, some caves bore traces of human activity—litter alongside stalactites—prompting me to reflect on balancing exploration and conservation. The trek through the primitive forest tested me physically and mentally, but upon finishing, I felt only pride, as if 'the light boat has passed countless mountains.' From struggling on Day 1 to keeping pace with the team, I learned no mountain path is endless. Thanks to my teammates and mentors for their support—see you at the next DofE!
Li, Grade 10: The 4-day, 3-night Silver trek was far more challenging than Bronze, both physically and mentally. Unlike regular hikes, the damp, dark caves required crawling, testing endurance and teamwork. Our mutual support led to victory. On Day 3, heavy rain turned the descent muddy and slippery, honing our adaptability and camaraderie. Along the way, we studied human impact on caves, noting more trash and graffiti in developed areas—deepening our awareness of environmental harm and sparking ideas for improvement. In short, we conquered physical trials and mental barriers on this journey.
Teacher Ms. Jin: Over five days in Maolan Reserve, I witnessed students’ transformation during their Silver Award AJ. What moved me most was their resilience. Facing physical limits and unfamiliar terrain, they supported each other: sharing loads, guiding paths, lifting spirits with humor. DofE is not just an outdoor challenge—it is a mirror revealing untapped grit and a forge shaping responsibility and leadership.
Through this DofE Adventurous Journey, students not only surpassed their limits but also discovered the essence of growth in collective strength. Behind every challenge lies self-discovery and transcendence.
We look forward to more students braving future adventures, measuring the world with their steps, and becoming their best selves through action!
