A Story of Student YAN: The Journey to Cambridge Maths Top in the World with Full Marks

Recently, Cambridge International held the Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards ceremony. YAN, a Grade 10 student from the International Curriculum at PKXYS, was honoured to be on the podium. With a perfect score in Mathematics, he was awarded "Top in the World" in Mathematics by Cambridge International.

This prestigious award recognises the highest single-subject achievers worldwide, selected from millions of international curriculum candidates. It is a powerful affirmation of individual academic excellence and a testament to the school's strong track record in nurturing globally minded, high-achieving learners. Below is a first-person account based on YAN's reflections.

I never imagined that one day I would stand on the stage of the Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards ceremony, shoulder to shoulder with the best students from all over the world. This honour affirms not only my ability in mathematics but also a belief I hold deeply: talent may open the door, but it is hard work, self-discipline, and perseverance that truly lead to excellence.

Details and Habits: The Foundation of Full Marks

My journey was not marked by dramatic breakthroughs, but by steady, consistent effort. Since junior secondary school, I have focused on building strong study habits: well-organised materials, clear notes, and careful planning of time and assignments. These seemingly small routines became my greatest support when preparing for Cambridge examinations. I believe that with sufficient care and seriousness towards every question, anyone can aim high. Full marks are not a miracle—they are the result of countless small details done well.

From Uncertainty to Passion: Finding Direction with Teachers' Guidance

When I transferred from the Hong Kong Curriculum to the International Curriculum in Grade 9, I was uncertain about my future academic direction. Fortunately, with the patient guidance and encouragement of my teachers, I gradually discovered my interests through elective subjects and unearthed the field I hope to pursue at university. Finding what I truly enjoy transformed me from a passive learner into an active explorer. Whenever I encountered difficulties, my teachers offered tireless support and guidance, helping me regain confidence and keep pace. I would not be where I am today without their timely advice and encouragement.

Learning and Growth: A Conversation with Oneself

One of my favourite quotes is by Winston Churchill: "Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts." Along my learning journey, I have faced setbacks and frustrations. Learning to reflect and let go is just as important as striving forward. By analysing mistakes and keeping an error log, I learnt to turn setbacks into signposts for improvement. I understand that I am not perfect, and that pressure can sometimes affect my emotions. Yet this is precisely what growth means — continuously learning how to engage in honest dialogue with ourselves and how to become more resilient.

Balance: To Go Further

I firmly believe that academic success requires balance. Football, badminton, reading, and spending time with friends help me recharge and maintain clarity and energy. Taking time to rest is not a distraction—it allows me to engage with learning in a healthier and more sustainable way.

Honour Is a Beginning, Not an End

This "Top in the World" certificate is not the end of my journey, but the opening of a new door. It prompts deeper reflection: how should I plan my university applications? Which field do I truly wish to pursue? What is my long-term career direction? I hope that both my peers and I will continue to set ambitious goals while remaining grounded, open-minded, and willing to explore our full potential.

Gratitude to My School: Lighting the Way Forward

My deepest thanks go to the school and all my teachers. While achievement comes from personal effort, it would be far more difficult without their selfless dedication, professional guidance, and unwavering support during challenging times. They teach not only knowledge but also exemplify the true spirit of education through care and commitment. This gratitude will stay with me as I step confidently into a broader future.

As Socrates once said, "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." This global achievement is the radiance of a flame ignited within a student. Looking ahead, the school will continue to uphold its educational philosophy of "Nurturing Brilliant Generations". With inspiration and support, PKXYS will accompany every student as they ignite their potential, pursue excellence, and write their own remarkable stories in a wider world.
