Joy in Giving: Our Students Shine on Flag Day

Every summer, students from Shenzhen Hong Kong Pui Kiu College Longhua Xinyi School (PKXYS) can be found taking part in a variety of educational trips, research activities, and community service, putting learning into practice. On 26th July, our students, along with their teachers and parents, from the Kindergarten, Primary School Division, and Secondary School Division joined Hong Kong's annual Lok Sin Tong Territory-Wide Flag Day.

Flag Day is a long-standing fundraising tradition unique to Hong Kong. Volunteers carry donation bags provided by the organising charity and invite members of the public to give. In return, donors receive a small sticker printed with the charity's logo. Funds raised on 26th July will go towards Lok Sin Tong's work in healthcare, education, elderly care, and community services—helping those in need.

Here's a look at how our students and parents got involved:

Kindergarten

For our youngest participants, Flag Day was a meaningful way to connect with the community and learn to give back.At first, some were shy as they stepped into the busy streets. But with support from their teachers and parents, they soon found confidence—approaching passers-by with outstretched hands and polite voices to introduce the fundraising cause.Some members of the public even crouched down to take photos with the children after donating, capturing warm and memorable moments. The children carefully placed stickers on donors'clothing to say thank you.From initial hesitation to growing confidence, the experience became a valuable learning journey for our youngest students.

Primary School Division

At 9 am on Flag Day, 25 students from the Primary SchoolDivision also gathered at Kowloon Park in Tsim Sha Tsui. Everyoneof them was eager with smiles and ready to begin. Some students even brought their younger siblings to join inthe event. They couldn't wait to participate in the flag-selling activity on the day. Amid the blazing sunshine, they bravely persisted,andin just over two hours, the flag bags were filled with people's earnest love. Such good deeds and experiences werevery precious for the children.

Student OU said, "Last year, I also participated in the flag-selling event. This year, people can donate by scanning the QR code. It's really a new experience forus!"Student ZOU's father said, "Our familyof four members left Shenzhen for Hong Kong at 7 am. My daughter and younger son were particularly active in the flag-selling event. Through this activity, their social skillsand courage have been greatly enhanced."

Ms. LEE Pui Ah,Chairmanof Kowloon Lok Sin TongandDirectorofPKXYS,also stated,"Today, we saw that all students of PKXYS worked very hard. Most importantly, everyone had the courage to sell flags. Even for those children who couldn't speak Cantonese, they had the courage to sell flags by speaking Mandarin. Many passers-by were very willing to buy from them. I think this isa very good experiencefor them.Doing good deeds together is the greatest joy."

Secondary School Division

The students of the Secondary School Division were very enthusiastictoo. Many secondary school students walking side by side with their parents, proactively introducing the purpose and significance of the flag-selling event to the public. Thanks to the efforts of the students, many tourists responded enthusiastically and made generous donations.

Some students and parents participated in the flag-selling activity for the second year. They said that the flag-selling activity not only allows students to step out of the classroom and get in touch with the real society, but also provides a rare opportunity for children to learn the ability to communicate with others; moreover, the activity supports charitable organisations with practical actions and enables childrento experience the value of caring and giving.

Student FENG, who had just joined the PKXYS big family, received the flag bag with his mother and sisteron the day and stood at the entrance of a crowded MTR station to bravely introduce the flag-selling activity to passers-by. Despite the scorching sun and therush ofpedestrians, their patience and enthusiasm remained undiminished. As each sticker was delivered, their flag bag gradually filled up.

FENG and his mother said, "We have never participated in such a fundraising event before. When we learnt that the school would hold such a caring charity activity, we would certainly support it. We believe that even if our strength is small, we can still help more people in need." With smiling faces and stickers on the street, the students recorded this loving memory with their actions.

Committed to its mission of "nurturing brilliant generations", PKXYS integrates Shenzhen-Hong Kong education through thoughtful curriculum design and community-based activities. The flag-selling event helped students develop communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. More importantly, it encouraged them to take an active role in community service and contribute to building a better society.
