Forged Through Fire, the Spirit Endures: A Commemorative Cultural Performance by Longhua's Ethnic Groups on the 80th Anniversary of Victory in the War of Resistance

On the morning of 21st September, Shenzhen Hong Kong Pui Kiu College Longhua Xinyi School (PKXYS) hosted a moving artistic performance titled "Forged Through Fire, the Spirit Endures". The event marked the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, and was jointly organised by the United Front Work Department of the Longhua District Committee (also acting as the Longhua District Ethnic Affairs Bureau) and the Longhua District Education Bureau. Among the distinguished attendees were Ms. WU Huan, Deputy Director-General of the United Front Work Department of the Shenzhen Municipal Committee and Director-General of the Shenzhen Municipal Ethnic Affairs Bureau, as well as Mr. ZHAN Huijun, Standing Committee Member of the Longhua District Committee and Director-General of the United Front Work Department of Longhua District.

Also present were key officials from the Ethnic Division of the United Front Work Department of the Shenzhen Municipal Committee, leading officials of the Longhua District Education Bureau, the Publicity Department and United Front Work Department of the Longhua District Committee, the Longhua District Culture, Radio, Television, Tourism and Sports Bureau, Longhua District Work Department of Mass Organisations, and other departments; representatives of the Shenzhen Association for the Promotion of Ethnic Unity & Development at municipal and district levels; school leaders; community representatives from various ethnic groups, representatives from families of martyrs and soldiers; and student and parent representatives of PKXYS.

Structured into five poignant chapters — Remembrance of the Land, Songs of Heroism, Passing the Torch, Dreams in Unity, and Eternal Light — the performance blended historical narrative, artistic expression, and heartfelt emotion. Through 12 original programmes co-created by schools and ethnic communities from both Shenzhen and Hong Kong, the performance transcended traditional commemorative formats, building a spiritual "Great Wall" of ethnic unity that spanned generations and geographies.

The performance opened with a powerful recitation, "Chimes of Blood and Fire", delivered by PKXYS students, whose stirring voices awakened the collective memory of a nation. A performance of the classic Peking Opera piece "The Red Detachment of Women" vividly recalled the heroic alliance between the Li ethnic group and the Qiongya Column. The dance piece "The Land", performed barefoot with traditional waist drums, expressed the deep-rooted bond between the military and the people. "Youth of Shenzhen Pledge Loyalty to the Motherland" portrayed a time-spanning dialogue that bridged the wartime struggles and the modern triumphs of Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. "Young Guardians of Culture" paid tribute to the unsung villagers who safeguarded national heritage during the Baishilong Great Rescue. A mesmerising instrumental ensemble, "Flourishing Age", united diverse ethnic instruments in a resonant ode to the Chinese nation as one family. Students from both sides of the border sang "Lesser Court Hymns" (Xiaoya), drawing from classical poetry to convey the deep cultural and emotional ties between Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

The final chapter brought tears and hope in equal measure. "Fair Winds on the Way Home" offered a gentle remembrance of history with warmth and tenderness. The energetic "Hand in Hand, China" symbolised all ethnic groups moving forward together. The performance reached its stirring conclusion as the entire audience stood to sing "Ode to the Motherland", a heartfelt tribute to the memory of history, the value of peace, and unwavering faith in the future.

"This performance gave our children a profound understanding of the spirit of national unity that carried us through the War of Resistance," many parents reflected. "It made history tangible — no longer distant or abstract, but a real, emotional force we could all feel."

A student from Hong Kong, ZHAO, shared, "Standing on stage today, I remembered making embroidered balls and playing the bronze drum with friends from Donglan, Guangxi. The Chinese nation has always been a family — united in spirit and action, standing together through thick and thin."

A representative from the Longhua District Ethnic Affairs Bureau remarked that the performance was a meaningful attempt to integrate the spirit of resistance with ethnic unity education. "Through this initiative, the awareness of our shared national identity becomes something deeply felt and understood." Longhua District will continue to use such events to deepen educational exchange between Shenzhen and Hong Kong, and to advance rich, diverse, and engaging programmes that promote ethnic unity and progress.
