Uncovering the "Magic" of Leaves——K3 Mangrove Adventure

As the autumn breeze gently swept through the classroom, the K3 class embarked on their most exciting outdoor lesson yet! The "Wonderful Leaves" theme took the children on a field trip to the Shenzhen Futian Mangrove Ecological Park's Science Exhibition Centre, where they explored the "hidden secrets of leaves" by the coast. Here, the mangroves have "waterproof" leaves and "breathing" roots—each leaf a little master of survival. Let's follow the children's steps and discover how nature teaches us the best lessons!

Discovering Mangrove Leaves – A Journey into Nature's Classroom

The "Little Secrets of Mangroves" activity was an outdoor extension of our "Wonderful Leaves" theme. We didn't just visit a park; we brought the classroom to the mangrove forest! Through "looking, listening, touching, and searching", the children unlocked the secrets of how mangrove leaves survive. Why don't they rot even when submerged in seawater? Why are the leaves always shiny? How are they different from the leaves we usually see? The answers were all waiting for them in this adventure!

Unlocking Leaf Secrets – The Mangrove's Survival Tricks

The children, guided by teachers and a guide, explored four key areas of the exhibition, each revealing a unique secret about mangrove leaves.

Welcome Hall 3D Sand Model

First, we saw the mangrove's "home". The 3D sand model vividly displayed the cross-section of a mangrove forest, and the children discovered that mangroves grow in tidal zones, where the water constantly rises and falls. With leaves immersed in moist air all the time, how do they breathe? (Hint: the answer is in the "breathing roots" section!)

The Mangrove World

Here, we found "breathing roots"! The roots poke out of the ground like little antennas, and the children were invited to touch them: "This is the mangrove's 'breathing pipe'. Thanks to these roots, the leaves and trunks don't mind being submerged in water!" There's also an interactive screen showing how mangrove leaves change through the seasons—bright green in spring, deep green in summer, and still green in autumn, thanks to their "waterproof coats" (a leathery surface that locks in moisture).

Bird Paradise

Look up to the bird-watching screen! It features the adorable "black-faced spoonbill" (a critically endangered species, with Shenzhen Bay as an important wintering ground). The teacher explained, "Birds love coming to the mangroves because the leaves shelter them from the wind and rain. When leaves fall into the water, they feed small fish, which then feed the birds—this is how leaves play a big part in the ecosystem!"

History of the Park

The children also explored old photos of a small fishing village, recognised traditional fishing tools, and heard stories about Shenzhen's past. They learnt that "this area used to be a fishing village, but now it's a safe haven for small animals," discovering how urban development and wetland conservation go hand in hand.

Treasure Hunt

After leaving the exhibition centre, each child received a "Plant Mission Card" with illustrations of three types of mangrove leaves. They teamed up with their friends for a fun "treasure hunt":

Find the "Thick Leaf": Feel the smooth, thick "waterproof coat" of the autumn mangrove leaves.

Find the "Salt-Excreting Dots": Check the back of the mangrove leaves for tiny "salt glands"—the mangrove's secret weapon to get rid of salt from seawater, so the leaves don't get "pickled".

Find the "Mangrove Babies": Look closely at the mangrove branches, where little "viviparous seedlings" hang—these are the mangrove's "babies". They fall into the water and grow into little trees, already adapted to the coastal environment.

Mangrove Memories – A Group Photo

Each class had its own special "photo spot". The children proudly held their mission cards or a leaf they particularly liked and posed with their friends for an "exploration photo" to capture the happy learning moments!

My Mangrove Discoveries

Back at school, we reflected on our adventure:

The children shared their discoveries: "The leaf I touched was thick and felt like plastic!" "The back of the leaf had tiny white dots—they're for getting rid of salt!" Using mangrove leaf specimens and models of breathing roots, the teacher summarised the key points: The leathery surface and salt glands of mangrove leaves help them survive in the humid, salty coastal environment. Not only do the leaves help the mangrove "eat" (through photosynthesis), but they also purify the water, protect the coastline, and provide shelter for small animals—truly an "ecological hero"!

This time, we didn't just take the children to "see the sights"; we brought them into a "nature classroom"—turning the "leaves" from their textbooks into real, hands-on knowledge they can touch, see, and understand. We hope the K3 little explorers have unlocked their own "leaf secrets" in the mangrove forest, turning their curiosity about nature into some of the most valuable lessons on their journey of growth!

If you intend to enrol in PKXY Kindergarten, please complete your application form through our online application system.

The application deadline is 31st December 2025.

Parents are required to fill out the application form online. Once confirmed, the system will issue a "Candidate Number" for future reference.

If there are available places, our school will contact suitable applicants for an interview. Parents should use the Candidate Number provided to check the status of their application.
