Cross-Disciplinary Lecture "Art or Economics? A Romantic Cross-Disciplinary Exploration!" Successfully Held

Recently, our school hosted a distinctive and engaging cross-disciplinary lecture titled "Art or Economics? A Romantic Cross-Disciplinary Exploration!" The event featured Assistant Professor TANG Yinuo from Peking University HSBC Business School, who delivered stimulating intellectual and sensory experiences for both students and staff.

Guest Speaker: A Model of Cross-Disciplinary Excellence – Professor TANG Yinuo

Assistant Professor Tang Yinuo is a faculty member at Peking University HSBC Business School and an internationally acclaimed pianist. He studied under Professor ZHOU Guangren at the Central Conservatory of Music and has represented China in cultural and artistic exchanges in Australia, Germany, France, and other countries. He has performed on world-renowned stages including the Sydney Opera House, the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, and the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York. His artistic achievements have been recognised through several international awards, including the Gold Medal at the Seattle International Piano Competition and the First Prize at the Chicago International Music Competition.

Lecture Focus: Cross-Disciplinary Thinking and Integrated Practice

Drawing on his dual background in art and economics, Professor TANG explored the topic in a clear and accessible manner, addressing:

- The shared underlying logic of art and economics

- The value of cross-disciplinary thinking in contemporary society

- Diverse pathways for personal development through subject integration

Through vivid examples and personal experiences, he encouraged students to consider how artistic sensibility and economic thinking can be combined to cultivate creativity and adaptability—key competencies for the future.

Interactive Session: A Meeting of Minds and Ideas

During the interactive segment, students displayed remarkable enthusiasm and engagement. Professor TANG gave live guidance to a performance by a Grade 7 student, HE, offering advice on emphasising melody and contrast during the performance, as well as offering words of encouragement and praise for his playing.

One Grade 7 student, LUO, asked Professor TANG how he first became interested in the intersection of art and economics. TANG shared that his early piano training gave him a deep appreciation of art, while his later academic journey into economics prompted him to reflect on the connections between the two fields.

Another Grade 8 student, CHEN, was curious about how creative thinking in the arts could support the understanding of economic issues. Professor TANG responded that interdisciplinary learning provides diverse perspectives and ways of thinking, which are invaluable when addressing complex economic problems. He emphasised that creativity is a skill that cannot be easily explained—it requires personal experience and practice to truly grasp and develop.

At the conclusion of the lecture, our Executive Principal, Dr. WANG Hongjun, presented Professor TANG with a certificate of appreciation and took a commemorative photo with the professor and attending students, capturing this valuable exchange.

Significance: A Vivid Example of Integrated Education

This lecture forms part of our school's ongoing efforts to promote interdisciplinary learning and broaden students’ horizons. By inviting a scholar who bridges artistic excellence and economic scholarship, we aim to:

- Break down disciplinary boundaries and inspire innovative thinking

- Enrich learning experiences and enhance overall competencies

- Create a platform for dialogue to inspire future planning

Looking Ahead: Continuing to Foster Cross-Disciplinary Dialogue

Our school will continue to host a series of cross-disciplinary lectures and workshops centred on themes such as "Art and Technology" and "Humanities and Innovation". Through these initiatives, we seek to foster an open, integrated, and mutually enriching campus culture, empowering students to grow into future-ready individuals with cross-disciplinary capabilities and a global perspective.
