Unlocking Oxford for PKXYS Students: Insights from an Admissions Officer

On the evening of 3rd March, Dr. Bessie O'Dell, Admissions Officer and Seminar Director at the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford, visited our school and delivered an informative lecture to nearly 300 students.

The lecture was packed with eager attendees. Dr. O'Dell began by introducing the students to Oxford University's rich history, outstanding academic achievements, and unique college life, offering a glimpse into the charm of this world-renowned institution. She then shifted the focus to Oxford's application process—a topic of great interest to the students. Drawing on her extensive admissions experience, she provided detailed and practical advice on academic performance, personal statements, entrance exams, and interviews. Dr. O'Dell emphasised the highly competitive nature of admissions to Oxford and Cambridge, urging students to plan early and develop their skills holistically to stand out among applicants.

At the end of the lecture, Dr. O'Dell patiently answered a variety of student questions, creating a lively and engaging atmosphere. Many students expressed that the session deepened their understanding of Oxford and its application process while also giving them greater clarity about their future academic goals. This lecture not only provided students with a valuable opportunity to engage directly with an Oxford admissions officer but also strengthened the connection between our school and the world's top universities.

I would like to thank the admissions officer for providing comprehensive information about Oxford applications, including both academic and extracurricular requirements, as well as details on the written test, interview formats, and preparation strategies. This session helped me clearly understand that while academic performance is the foundation, soft skills must also be developed through research, competitions, and other experiences. The presentation has illuminated my path to studying abroad and inspired me to work hard toward my goal.

Listening to the speech by the Oxford University admissions officer, I gained more than I expected. Taking a deeper look at the application process helped me identify areas where I need improvement. While excellent academic performance serves as a stepping stone, rich academic experience, unique insights, and critical thinking are equally important. Additionally, the discussion on the use of AI gave me new perspectives on my future academic pursuits.
