Shenzhen-Hong Kong Students Gear Up for 15th National Games: Boys' and Girls' Basketball Teams Secure Double Win

A stunning buzzer-beater brought the crowd to its feet,

cheers echoing through the court.

Girls: 26–15

A double win for the school!

#14 from the boys' team and #8 from the girls' team

were named MVPs of the match.

On the afternoon of Saturday, 24th May, guests and youth representatives from both Shenzhen and Hong Kong gathered at Shenzhen Hong Kong Pui Kiu College Longhua Xinyi School (PKXYS) to officially launch the "Shoot for Hope – Hong Kong Youth Basketball Programme". The event also featured a friendly basketball tournament to celebrate the upcoming 15th National Games, injecting fresh energy into youth exchange in the Greater Bay Area. Our school's boys' and girls' teams impressed with stellar performances, confidently securing both trophies!

Basketball as a Bridge for Youth Development

The event was held under the guidance of the United Front Work Department of Shenzhen, and jointly organised by the Hong Kong Shenzhen Youth Association and the Hong Kong Youth Development Alliance, with strong support from PKXYS. A total of 80 youth representatives from Shenzhen and Hong Kong took part — including players from our school teams. Distinguished guests included:

●Ms. WU Huan, Deputy Director General of the United Front Work Department of Shenzhen Municipal Committee of the CPC

●Mr. ZHAN Huijun, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Longhua District Committee and Director General of the United Front Work Department of Longhua District

●Ms. LEE Pui Ah, Member of the Shenzhen CPPCC, President of the Hong Kong Shenzhen Youth Association, and Director of PKXYS

●Mr. Tommy WONG Tang Tat, Principal of PKXYS

●Guests from: Hong Kong Shenzhen Youth Association, Hong Kong Futian Youth Association, Luohu Hong Kong-Macao Youth Alliance, Hong Kong Nanshan Youth Association, Hong Kong Yantian Youth Association, Hong Kong Longgang Youth Association, Hong Kong Longhua Youth Association, and Hong Kong Pingshan Youth Association

In the 400-seat theatre, the ceremony began with the national anthem and a solemn flag-raising. Guests then jointly lit the symbolic torch, officially launching the "Welcoming the 15th National Games" youth initiative. At the indoor basketball court, guests signed commemorative jerseys, and Ms. WU Huan performed the ceremonial tip-off.

The boys' team delivered a dynamic performance with sharp steals, fast breaks, and coordinated attacks that widened the score gap early on. They secured a commanding 29–16 victory.

The girls' team faced tough competition, trailing by two points at halftime. Undeterred, they adjusted their strategy, relying on smart passing and seamless teamwork to turn the game around. They emerged victorious with a final score of 26–15!

To recognise our school's contribution to fostering Shenzhen-Hong Kong integration through sports, the Hong Kong Shenzhen Youth Association presented us with a commemorative flag. Basketball brought us together as competitors — and as friends. In that moment, the distance between Hong Kong and Shenzhen disappeared. We were united by our shared passion for the game.

With less than six months to go before the 15th National Games, this youth exchange offered a meaningful prelude. Looking ahead, we remain committed to deepening Shenzhen-Hong Kong ties, promoting Greater Bay Area integration, and strengthening cultural and personal connections between Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland.
