Vibrant Greater Bay Area, United in Youth——A Double Sports Celebration Kicks Off the Countdown to the National Games

This golden autumn, excitement for the 15th National Games is already sweeping across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area! In anticipation of the 2025 Games, two major events highlighting the energy and creativity of young people from Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and Macao have launched in spectacular fashion. These are more than just sporting occasions—they're vibrant platforms for cultural exchange, youth engagement, and patriotic spirit. From a spectacular opening ceremony to fun, interactive activities, the aim is clear: to strengthen young people's sense of national identity and belonging through diverse sporting experiences.

Opening Ceremony: Little Lions and Dragons Steal the Show!

The ceremony opened with a heartwarming video of young people from Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and Macao visiting National Games venues—capturing their excitement for the big event ahead. As the national anthem played, the shared love for the country, Hong Kong, and Macao united the audience. Taking centre stage were children from Pui Kiu Xinyi Kindergarten, the only kindergarten team to perform at the opening ceremony of the "Youth Power in the Greater Bay Area – Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Macao Youth Welcome the 15th National Games" sports carnival.

With pounding drums and unshakeable spirit, these young performers delivered "United Power", a visual and musical feast that lit up the stage.

Each beat landed with confidence and precision, creating a rhythm that charged the atmosphere. Right behind them, bright-eyed little lions and dragons bounded across the floor—playful yet focused—moving in perfect harmony with the booming drums.

Their joyful performance had the audience erupting in applause and cheers. Parents and guests quickly reached for their phones to capture the moment.

These children were not just performers—they were charming young ambassadors of Chinese culture.

Greater Bay Area Curling Experience Day: A Parent-Child Lesson in Strategy and Sportsmanship

Meanwhile, over at Pui Kiu Xinyi School, another form of sport took centre stage. Often referred to as "chess on ice", a curling taster session offered families a chance to explore strategy, teamwork, and elegance. The "Greater Bay Area Curling Welcomes the National Games" Invitational and Experience Day was co-organised by Social Workers Across Borders Limited, Rapport Social Services Limited, Hong Kong Sichuan Youth Association, and other community groups from across the region. A shining example of the "sports + education" model, this event brought together over 500 participants—including family and group teams—from all 9+2 cities of the Greater Bay Area.

Floor curling is a sport that places strong emphasis on sportsmanship and etiquette. More than just a physical activity, it offers a rare and valuable opportunity for parent-child bonding. Parents and children teamed up as close-knit units—learning together, supporting one another, and becoming the most trusted teammates on the court. From planning strategies to sharing knowing high-fives, each successful throw became a moment of connection and growth.

The experience delivered more than just fun. Children learnt how to listen, communicate, and collaborate. They came to understand that we matters more than I, and gained a lasting appreciation for teamwork. Along the way, they learnt to respect their opponents, play by the rules, and remain humble—win or lose. It wasn't just a sporting exercise; it was a lesson in character, resilience, and grace—a life skill that will serve them well far beyond the court for years to come.

We stepped away from the everyday for a moment and immersed ourselves in two unforgettable celebrations of youth and sport. In running and throwing, we built connection; through teamwork and competition, we grew together.

In the name of sport, let's cheer on the 15th National Games—and empower the future of the Greater Bay Area through youth.
